The International Day of Conscience

On Sunday, April 5, this year, the International Day of Conscience, which is one of the Days of the United Nations, will be observed around the world.

At the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Kingdom of Bahrain sponsored an initiative by the Prime Minister, His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, to designate 5 April as an International Day of Conscience. The Assembly unanimously adopted resolution A/RES/73/329 on 31 July 2019 entitled "Promoting the Culture of Peace with Love and Conscience" and declared 5 April as the International Day of Conscience (IDC). The resolution invites everyone to build a culture of peace with love and conscience in accordance with the culture and other appropriate circumstances or customs of their local, national and regional communities. It calls upon every human being to participate in an individual capacity and through networks and puts an emphasis on celebrating diversity and inclusiveness.

The International Day of Conscience is inspired by article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states, "all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood." It aims to promote a culture of peace based on a set of values, attitudes, and behaviors inspired by the principles of freedom, justice, democracy, human rights, tolerance and solidarity.

Conscious of the need for the creation of conditions of stability and well-being and peaceful and friendly relations based on respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion, the General Assembly declared 5 April the International Day of Conscience.

We invite you to observe the day with us online. The video conference will start at 11 AM, Sunday, April 5th and will last for about an hour. The participants are welcome to share writings from their Holy Scriptures or other writings, say prayers, recite poetry, perform music or other art related to the topic. After that the host will offer the participants a chance to share their thoughts on the topic with the group. Hopefully we will have a lively and constructive conversation on this vital issue. You can express yourself either in Icelandic or English, but no translation will be offered.

You can join the meeting by clicking on the link below. You will be prompted to install the zoom app if you haven't done so already. You can choose either the free or paid version. You don't need the paid version to join the meeting.
